Nadi means river, not nerve. The classical texts describe 72,000 channels through which prana moves; of these, fourteen are principal and three are decisive. Learn to map them, read which one is dominant in you right now, and purify the whole network.
01
The Three Great Channels
Lunar, solar and central
Almost every state you experience — withdrawn or restless, receptive or driven, dull or luminous — can be read from which of these three channels is carrying the flow.
Ida— the lunar channel, left-flowing — cooling, receptive, mental, associated with the parasympathetic tone
Pingala— the solar channel, right-flowing — heating, active, physical, associated with the sympathetic drive
Sushumna— the central channel through the spine — the path of meditation, opening only when the other two are in balance
The crossing points— where ida and pingala meet the central channel, and why the chakras sit exactly there
02
The Principal Nadis
The fourteen named channels
Gandhari and Hastijihva— governing the eyes and the field of vision
Pusha and Yashasvini— governing the ears and the sense of hearing
Alambusha and Kuhu— governing the mouth and the reproductive region
Shankhini, Saraswati, Payasvini, Varuni, Vishvodhara— governing speech, elimination, fluid balance and abdominal function
The minor network— how the fourteen branch into the classical 72,000

Reading Your Own Flow — Swara
The nostril dominance laboratory
Swara Vidya is the practical science of the channels: your dominant nostril changes roughly every 60 to 90 minutes, and each state suits different activity. This is direct, testable and immediately useful.
Testing dominance— the simple check, and how to record it through the day
Left active— cooling, calm, reflective — suited to study, planning, rest and gentle work
Right active— heating, mobilising — suited to exertion, digestion, decisive action
Both flowing— the sushumna window — the natural moment for meditation and stillness
Deliberate switching— posture, pressure and breath methods to change dominance when the state does not suit the task
04
Blockage and Purification
Nadi shuddhi
Obstructed channels announce themselves before disease does — as heaviness, erratic energy, disturbed sleep and a breath that will not lengthen.
Signs of obstruction— shallow breath, restless sleep, uneven digestion, sudden shifts in mood and drive
Causes— irregular routine, suppressed emotion, over-stimulation, stale air, poor posture and depleted rest
Nadi shodhana— the central purification practice, taught in graded stages
Supporting measures— shatkarma cleansing, oil massage, sattvic diet and the discipline of a regular hour
Markers of clear channels— steady breath, even nostril cycling, calm mornings and a mind that settles quickly
From the Teaching
"The channels are rivers. Practice does not dig new ones — it clears what has silted the old."
